Tips for Finding the right Therapist
By Evelia Saucedo AMFT
Finding a therapist can be very scary and/or difficult, especially if it’s your first time in therapy or when you’ve had an unpleasant experience. Forming a relationship with a therapist can take time for some, while for others it is instant. - Ask questions.
- Pay attention to your own research.
- Inquire about the therapist’s modality (i.e. the techniques/approaches used to treat patients).
- Prepare your goals ahead of time and share what you’re wanting to work on.
- Ask the therapist for their experience.
- Pay attention to your own responses, feelings of trust and your own level of comfort.
Know that if you don’t feel comfortable at all, then it’s important to consider your own feelings and that you can switch therapist at any time.
