Written by: Written by: DR. LAQUESHA ROBINSON, PSY.D

Overwhelmed by images of the mob? Sudden irritability after noticing negative posts in your news feeds? Over the last few month, you may have noticed that many of our friends, family and strangers have taken to social media to share their political opinions. The emergence of these enduring debates on social media has raised our stress level. Some notable reactions as it concerns our mental health. Ways to manage your stress levels from social media include: 1. Take a Break from Social Media, 2. Limit Your News Consumption, 3. Practice Relaxation Methods, 4. Practice Mindfulness, and 5. Get Adequate Rest, Exercise, and Nutrition.

  1. Take a Break from Social Media. Several people I know have chosen to “unfriend,” “block,” or “pause” seeing the      offensive feeds that trigger emotional upset. This may assist with to stay emotionally healthy.
  2. Limit Your News Consumption. Limit your consumption involves being aware that too much media exposure can increase distress. It is okay to be informed and to follow news stories, but make sure you are getting your news from reliable sources.
  3. Practice Relaxation Methods. Seeing repeated images that remind you of what happened can trigger strong      negative emotional reactions. You may want to incorporate relaxation method into your daily life. Some methods include listening music, walking, muscle relaxation exercises, deep breathing exercises, meditation, and yoga.
  4. Practice Mindfulness. Mindfulness involves paying attention to and accepting your feelings, thoughts, and      sensations. Practicing mindfulness might help you cope with stress or difficult emotions.
  5. Get Adequate Rest, Exercise, and Nutrition. These three physical practices, getting adequate rest, exercise, and nutrition      support good mental health.
