
The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

In today’s world, many of us rely on social media platforms for connectedness and staying informed. Social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram allow us to find and connect with each other instantaneously and has become are norm in our daily lives. Social media is a great outlet that enables you to stay connected, find new friends, network, raise awareness and promote causes which are all positive aspects. Therefore, being socially connected to others can ease stress, anxiety, and depression, boost self-worth, provide comfort and enjoyment. However, while there are many benefits to social media, there are also negative aspects.
Social media may promote negative experiences which may have important consequences on our mental welling. Negative experiences linked to social media include: Constant fear of missing out, isolation, depression and anxiety, and cyberbullying. Despite the ongoing debates in literature over whether social media use has a positive or negative effect on individual wellbeing, please remember to take care of your mental health and seek help from a professional, if you are experiencing worsening of mental health conditions.
