Everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist.
Whether you are struggling with one of life’s many challenges or simply looking to enhance your wellbeing, therapy is designed to make your life better. That being said, there are some red flags that indicate whether therapy is urgent and professional help is warranted.
Here are some of the warning signs that signal an urgent need for therapy services:
Therapists use “the Four D’s” to help identify a problem that is diagnosable: distress, dysfunction, deviance, and/or danger.
Distress means that you are suffering or feeling unwell. For example, anxiety causes us to feel worried, on edge, and overwhelmed, while depression makes us lose energy, interest, and hope for the future. It’s important to note that distress can look different in children, as a depressed or anxious child may actually appear irritable or defiant.
Dysfunction means that what’s happening is problematic or interferes with day to day living. If depression keeps you from being productive at work, that would be dysfunctional. If difficulties with social skills (e.g., Autism) or relationship-building keep you lonely, that would count as dysfunction.
Deviance is about going against society’s rules or family expectations. Stealing, cheating, buying/selling drugs, and disobeying parents are all examples of deviance. Some people are ordered to see a therapist after committing a crime to help them get back on track.
Danger is pretty straightforward. When we struggle with making healthy choices, that can be dangerous to our physical wellbeing (e.g., eating disorders, binging, alcoholism, etc.). But sometimes, issues like thoughts of suicide or self-harm can put us in more immediate danger.
If you or a loved one are experiencing issues that are distressful, dysfunctional, deviant, and or dangerous, don’t wait. Contact us today to get the help you deserve.
Psychotherapy (also called therapy or counseling) is the first line of treatment for a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems. In many ways, psychotherapy is like physical therapy, except instead of working on your body, we work on your life. You, your child, or your family meet regularly with a therapist to talk through your situation, work on goals, and bolster personal progress.
Therapy helps people in three main ways.
First, therapy offers a safe, confidential space where you can share and be supported without fear of judgment. Therapists are specially trained to help you feel heard and understood, and they are legally bound by confidentiality, which means you can speak freely without concern of others learning about your personal life.
Second, therapists are expert problem-solvers. No matter what life has thrown your way, no matter how difficult things might seem, it always helps to get an outside perspective. Therapists can help you discover solutions to many of life’s challenges while also serving as resources for information and education.
And third, therapy offers a chance for deeper self-awareness and insight. As you work to make improvements in your life, you will also begin to discover new things about yourself and your personality. Therapists can serve as a mirror for helping you recognize aspects of yourself (or your child) that you may not have noticed before.
Some of the most common issues addressed in therapy include:
· Depression
· Anxiety
· Sleep issues
· Family problems
· Behavior problems
· Relationship problems
· Trauma and PTSD
· Stress management
· Work and productivity issues
· Difficult decision making
· Autism
· ADHD
· And more
